SIGNS & NOTICES
Below
are featured a number of signs with lettering hand
painted lettering either straight on the flat surface or over
hand engraved lettering, the wooden plaques can be stained and
laquered to the desired finish. An overview of the creation is
outlined below.
OVERVIEW OF CREATION PROCESS
ORIGINALS
NEW SIGNS WITH CHANGES
The two original signs pictured above needed to be
replaced with changes to the opening hours, addition of text
where a plate with text had been added and the reversal of
the arrow direction on the first sign. The resulting signs
needed to be of similar appearance with lettering in the
same font, engraved on a solid pine
plaque and protected against the weather.
It would have been possible to have the lettering
engraved with a cnc milling machine. Athough hand engraving
is a skilled process that is time consuming, it can still be
more cost efficient when compared to cnc milling on one-off
jobs. Obviously if there were 10 identical signs to be made
then this would not be the case.
STEP 1
A solid pine board of the same dimensions as the original
plaque was smoothed and set in front of a video projector
where the original sign was projected onto it at original
scale size. The image was then traced onto the board with
pencil.
STEP 2
The lettering was then engraved into the wood
STEP 3
The pine then stained similar to the originals
STEP 4
The engraved lettering was then overpainted
STEP 5
The signs were then both finished with 2 coats of half matt
laquer
